- Skrillex - San Diego VIP
And I thought I was done with Skrillex. He proved me wrong. Real bad.
In this track, he ditches the annoyingly robotic sound of something like wires grinding over the drop and jumps back to the smoother kind of power you’re used to from Scary Monsters & Nice Sprites (and even a dose of electro house from Slats Slats Slats).
Highly recommended. Find that mp3, people.
- Metronomy - The Bay (Erol Alkan’s Extended Rework)
So light and joyful for a thumping dance edit. Feels so good. A must listen of the year. (Download on the soundcloud page.)

Mix CD Life: Relax a Little
Long story short, I haven’t had internet at my house for three weeks. What is my life?
But since I have no intention of living like a wireless hermit, crippled by lack of Tumblr, I’ve been bubbling away with slightly less than new music that’s been sifting its way throughout my laptop. Semi-zen? Semi-passionate? You tell me.
Agnes Obel walks in with a soft, siren’s lull; Bandini’s Ecstasy of Gold remix gives us a little more hope; Ooah’s remix of Emancipator’s First Snow offers up a first taste of strength (along with more than a few voice samples); Junior Boys chime in with a little dose of sexy (not everything relaxing has to be tame); and RAC’s Washed Out Remix patiently leads us up to an incredibly far-reaching outro: Royksopp’s version of In This Shirt - pure emotion held within the body of a 10+ minute track. Is it too soon to call it love?
Call it Heartbeats. Think about what that means to you. Feel something. Why are there still words here? Just listen.

Mix CD Life: Rap + Mashups (Freedom Fighters)
(Download below. 320 kbps.)
In the middle of making a melodic dubstep mix, I was cutting songs together and got stuck on this one voice sample of, “pump, pump, pump it up!” After you hear the same thing a hundred times it’s like you never want to hear anything ever again. So you know what? Rap sounded like a pretty good idea.
I know what you’re thinking. “Rap? Wtf.” But seriously. I have absurdly high standards for rap, and it has to have some fucking amazing melodies. Starts off emotional; gets hopeful around Jurassic 5’s Freedom; The Roots and Mos def show up for some old fashioned wordplay; MF Doom makes things a little more funky; Cyclops Rock’s mashup brings us back down to Earth; Tech N9ne wants to show us HIS Earth; and Tyga leads us out on something a little more heartfelt.
Love, listen, enjoy. Call it, “Freedom Fighters.”

Dubstep Roundup
The past two weeks have been spent enveloped by chillwave and background sounds. You know, Emancipator, Emika, and basically anything like Teen Daze.
Problem is, it gets kind of boring being mellow for so long. Enter Dubstep immersion.
Don Diablo ft. Dragonette - Animale - (Datsik Dubstep Remix)

We can’t just jump from light to insane, so this remix gives us a nice transition into heavier fare. Gotta love female vocals, right? And such a smooth rhythm at the start. Whoop whoop whoop whoop whoop. Really entertaining/unique build-up around 1:36.
Richard Vission & Static Revenger (ft. Luciana) - I Like That (Adam F Dubstep Remix)

Enter a heavier twist on one of my favorite targets for remix pleasure. Luciana’s voice is raspy, dirty, and perfectly placed above deep bass. Amazingly quotable lyrics help too. Also: hi random drum & bass backbeats.
The Shangri-Las - Remember (Adventure Club Dubstep Remix) (download available)

“As you command, Megatron.” My love of Transformers as a kid is probably the only thing that explains why I love this voice sample so much (at 1:57). Listen through the whole track for a soft, 58 second intro filled with sweet soul, or skip ahead if something so technically awesome bores you, but either way, stay for the typical Adventure Club destruction that comes after.
Mt Eden Dubstep - Sierra Leone (download here)

Wooing, “whoa-oh,” voices flow in circles in the background until :27 when deep, relaxing bass kicks you, only to be toughened up even more around :41. A classic, through and through, but everyone who hasn’t already heard Mt Eden needs a crash course in what dubstep really should be. This.
Mix CD Life - Chillwave, Dance, Melodic Dubstep
This is me learning how to cut songs together. The result? A “mix cd” via Mediafire for all of you. All 320 kbps, all the time. Electrovision. Call the mix Breathe into the City.
It starts with warm undertones and chill, mostly background sounds that make for a relaxing mood; Theophilus London reboots the mix with a more energetic sound that stays poppy through Patrick Wolf and Lady Gaga; Madeon moves us back into party mode with a mega-mashup; and Cooler Couleur ends its dance run leading into a melodic dubstep three song conclusion.
Click, download, enjoy. First of many, I’m sure.

- Gesaffelstein - Aufstand
Aufstand = uprising in German. Gesaffelstein = French minimalist techno legend. So nice to just let this play, but if the beginning’s too slow, skip to around 55 seconds in. EPIC BASSLINE at 1:01.
Deep. Dark. Powerful.
